Ivan Pavlov: The autistic systemizer who conditioned himself

Ivan Pavlov never trained a dog to salivate to a bell. In three decades of research and tens of thousands of experimental trials, he and his coworkers employed a bell only in rare and unimportant circumstances. The iconic image — dog, bell, dripping saliva — is cultural condensation, not scientific record. His true quest was stranger and more ambitious. "Only one thing in life is of essential interest for us," he observed at its outset — "our psychical experience." From 1903 until his death in 1936, he directed an army of coworkers in the attempt to understand the psyche of his experimental dogs and thereby to "illuminate our mysterious nature, to explain the mechanism and vital meaning of that which most occupies Man — our consciousness and its torments."

The torments he knew intimately. He described his own outbursts as "morbid, spontaneous paroxysms" — explosive tempers for which he was famous throughout his life. At age forty, diagnosed with "neurasthenia or hysteria," he believed he was dying from a degenerative disease of the nerves. He alternated between exhilaration and depression, between fierce certainty and the devouring doubt he called his "Beast." Boris Babkin, who worked at his side for ten years, remembered him as "brilliant, childish, tyrannical, loveable, spoiled, stubborn … and impossible." He was disciplined and explosive, dependent and controlling, rational and emotionally chaotic, lonely and authoritarian, truth-obsessed and paranoid — a man of contradictions so stark they seemed to demand explanation.

This chapter proposes that those contradictions, and the extraordinary scientific achievements that grew alongside them, express a single underlying cognitive architecture. Ivan Pavlov was on the autism spectrum. More precisely, he embodied a particular autistic subtype: the monotropic systemizer with compulsive truth-drive, lifelong emotional dysregulation, and obsessive-compulsive personality structure, whose entire existence was organized around a single monotropic identity. That identity was science. His theory of conditioning emerged directly from his way of experiencing the world — a systematic model of the mind built from the materials of a mind that could not access its own interior through ordinary introspection.


The Pavlovs of Riazan were a family of priests, generation upon generation. Ivan Petrovich was the son of Petr, who was the son of Dmitrii, who was the son of Arkhip — a lineage extending backward through the eighteenth century to a peasant named Pavel who became a chanter in a small rural church. The family was bred in the clergy as other families were bred in the trades, and with that breeding came a particular cast of mind: systematic, hierarchical, devoted to a totalizing system of belief that organized all of reality into a coherent structure.

Petr Dmitrievich Pavlov, Ivan's father, was a successful priest who possessed "a strong will and was exacting toward others but also severe with himself." His orchard and vegetable garden were renowned throughout Riazan province, and he operated a gardening school that earned additional income. His sermons were shorter than those of other clerics — he rarely delivered them in their entirety — a pragmatism his parishioners appreciated. He bent the rules concerning church marriage to accommodate his flock's needs. Yet his children found him "extremely tight-fisted," and his daughter Lidiia described him as a despot.

Varvara Ivanovna, Ivan's mother, was a different presence. The daughter of a priest who had deliberately kept her illiterate, she became an avid reader, a chain-smoker, and — in the family's account — an "irritable, unstable, and explosive" woman. Her "frenzies," attributed to nervous disturbances and excruciating headaches after childbirth, confined her to bed for days at a stretch. Petr Dmitrievich described her as a "neurasthenic" and complained of having to rescue resident seminarians from his shrieking spouse. Ivan himself would later characterize her as "abnormally unbalanced." The marriage was tense and sometimes combative.

There were also the two uncles, both named Ivan, both priests, both defrocked. The elder was a man of Herculean constitution with a passion for the mass fistfights popular in rural Russia, expelled from the priesthood for his addiction to fighting and alcohol; he died young. The younger was a "profound comic" whose taste for bizarre pranks — bodies disappearing from coffins, a calf tied to a church bell rope — led to beatings from villagers and expulsion by church authorities. Their nephew, our Ivan Pavlov, would later describe them as suffering from "inner disorderliness."

This was the genetic and psychological inheritance into which Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was born in 1849: paternal rigidity and systemizing, maternal emotional intensity and dysregulation, and a broader family marked by behavioural extremes. The convergence of these two lines — paternal order and maternal chaos — would produce in their eldest son a mind of extraordinary systematic power that could not reliably govern its own emotional states. He would spend his life building external structures to compensate for what his nervous system could not provide internally.


The child was passionate, willful, thin-skinned, and narrow. A relative described him as "of small stature, even for his years, skinny, with ringlets falling on his large forehead, with grey, strikingly lively eyes." He laughed, screamed, and argued "until the tears fell." He had strong feelings about everything — "including people, whom he tended to either love or hate." He later recalled himself as a "puny, sickly lad" who was constantly at the center of "terrible quarrels," who "could spit and swear and fight," and who, indiscriminately pugnacious, "frequently took a thrashing from bigger boys."

His memory was phenomenal. He could recall details from before his first birthday — being carried into the family's new home. Most of us lose our earliest years to the fog of normal forgetting; Pavlov retained his. Such preserved early autobiographical memory has been associated with autism spectrum conditions.

At age eight, he learned with some difficulty the Russian alphabet and basic arithmetic. He cared little for either. He had already decided upon his future: he would be a gardener. He resisted his father's attempts to interest him in books, showed no enthusiasm for music or art, and much preferred to gather berries and help in the garden and orchard. Alone of all the family, he was his father's willing helper in the cultivation of the earth. This was the first expression of a monotropic attention architecture — a mind that could fully inhabit only one domain at a time and that found, in the systematic, sensory, repetitive labour of gardening, its most natural mode of engagement. The garden did not distract him from learning; the garden was what he wanted to learn.

At age nine, he fell from a fence onto a brick floor. The injury was severe. He was "long ailing" — approximately a year — and it was feared his lungs had been permanently damaged. His godfather, the abbot of St. Trinity's Monastery near Riazan, took the broken boy into his care. What followed was formative. The monk subjected his young charge to a rigid regime: by day, vigorous physical activity — gardening, gymnastics, swimming, skating, and the game of gorodki; by evening, confinement to a room surrounded by books. Bored and restless, the boy eventually began to read. The abbot had him write accounts of each evening's reading. Ivan's favourite was Krylov's Fables, which he learned almost entirely by heart and kept on his desk until the day he died.

The monk also noticed the boy's ambidexterity and encouraged him to develop it — another marker of atypical neurological development that has been observed at elevated rates in autistic populations.

Pavlov would speak frequently about his rescue at the monastery as a turning point. The monk's remedy for the broken boy became a tale and credo: the triumph of self-discipline, work, and regularity over the depredations of chance. In later years, this credo would become the foundation of his daily existence. The monastery was the prototype for the laboratory. The lesson was simple and it was total: internal chaos requires external order. He would spend the rest of his life constructing external orders adequate to contain his internal chaos.


At the Riazan Theological Seminary, the uneven cognitive profile sharpened. Ivan's written assignments in Latin and Greek were ranked first in his class year after year. In other subjects — catechism, sacred history, church statutes, grammar, arithmetic, geography — his grades were mediocre to poor during the first year, rising thereafter, "except for singing, in which his lack of talent was notable." The seminary tolerated such specialization. If a boy distinguished himself by devotion to some one subject, his shortcomings in others were overlooked. At the neighbouring gymnasium, such unevenness might have led to expulsion. At the seminary, it was met with the thought: might this not be a talent revealing itself?

The seminary also provided Pavlov with his only formal instruction in psychology. The course, taught by the young cleric Nikolai Glebov, propounded the Orthodox view of the soul as a "spiritual, independent, conscious and free force" distinct from the material body. Glebov warned his students against the "terrible strengthening of materialism, which sees in the human soul only a greater development of the soul of animals." Pavlov absorbed the material well enough to earn a grade of "excellent." But he had already, privately and utterly, rejected it.

Through the public library of Riazan — a creation of the liberal satirist Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin — Pavlov and his friends had discovered the radical literature of the 1860s. They queued before the locked doors on cold autumn mornings to compete for copies of The Contemporary and Russian Word, for the essays of Dmitrii Pisarev, for translations of Western scientific works. Pisarev preached scientism: science as the central force for social and moral progress. Sechenov's Reflexes of the Brain argued that even the most voluntary human actions could be explained as chains of reflexes — that thought was but "the first two-thirds of a psychical reflex." Lewes's Physiology of Common Life laid out the organism as a complex machine. Claude Bernard's lectures described the experimental method by which that machine could be understood.

Pavlov devoured them all. He also discovered Samuel Smiles's Self-Help, a collection of Victorian aphorisms on character, discipline, and purposeful hard work — a secular gospel of self-control that resonated with his experience at the monastery and with his constant difficulties managing his passionate nature. He could recite lengthy passages from memory. In later life, when he needed to calm himself or his coworkers, Smiles was one of the texts he reached for.

The worldview he absorbed from these readings remained essentially unchanged for the rest of his life. Scientific explanations were mechanistic. Organisms, including humans, were complex machines. The scientific method was identical whether one analyzed a rock, a plant, a frog, a human, or human society. And science was the only true path to human progress.

He had exchanged one totalizing system for another. The content was new; the cognitive architecture that required a total system was not. Orthodoxy had organized all of reality — nature, society, morality, meaning — into a single coherent structure. Scientism did the same. For a mind that could inhabit only one domain, a total system was not a luxury. It was a prerequisite for functioning.

The decision to abandon the priesthood and study science at St. Petersburg University led to "explosive confrontations" with his father — "heated arguments in which I went too far and that ended in quite serious quarrels." The break was permanent. Ivan would see his father only when absolutely necessary during very rare and brief trips to Riazan, and even then the quarrels continued. For the rest of his life, Pavlov's relationship with his father remained frozen at the point of rupture. When truth and relationship conflicted, truth won. It always would.


St. Petersburg in 1870 was Europe's third-largest city, the glittering capital of the Russian Empire, and the center of Russian science. It was also overwhelming. Pavlov and his fellow ex-seminarians scratched out an existence from kopeck to kopeck, eating at cheap dining halls and living in cramped quarters. The pressures took their toll.

"Psychiatry," Pavlov later recalled, "captured my interest at the very beginning of my Petersburg life." And for good reason. His closest friends succumbed one by one. Bystrov became suicidal — a "deep melancholy that continued for many months" and "numerous determined attempts at suicide" — before friends convinced him to abandon science for law. Chel'tsov suffered some kind of psychotic break, hallucinating devils in a doctor's waiting room and burning his possessions. Pavlov himself, in April 1871, was diagnosed with "disturbance of the nerves (neurosismus)" — a common diagnosis when the patient exhibited loss of energy and brainpower without apparent organic damage. He was in such a bad state that he left St. Petersburg before the end of the semester, without taking his examinations.

This was the first documented regulatory collapse. The transition to the demanding, unpredictable, socially complex environment of the capital had overwhelmed whatever internal regulatory capacity he possessed. He recovered over the summer in Riazan and returned in the fall with his younger brother Dmitrii — the beginning of a lifelong pattern.

Dmitrii was the sociable, worldly brother, the joker and jester. He sewed Ivan's shirts, found places to live and eat, organized his social life. He put it this way to Ivan's future wife: "A surprising boy, this Van'ka — he talks like a wise man, but in life every cockroach leads him about by the nose!" Ivan was the serious, talented boy with the explosive temper, destined for great things; Dmitrii was assigned by the family to be his brother's helpmate.

When Dmitrii's role receded, Serafima's expanded to fill it. When Serafima alone was insufficient, the entire laboratory system supplemented her. Pavlov's genius required a scaffold at every stage, and he found — or constructed — scaffolds at every stage. The dependency was not weakness. It was the necessary consequence of a monotropic attention architecture: the mind that was fully occupied by science could not simultaneously manage finances, clothing, meals, and social calendars. Those functions had to be externalized. They were.


At the university, Pavlov found his mentor. Il'ia Tsion was everything the young seminarian had dreamed of: a brilliant experimentalist with a European reputation, a master of surgical technique, an inspiring lecturer. "Never can such a teacher be forgotten," Pavlov later wrote. Tsion's lectures and laboratory training provided the only formal education in physiology Pavlov would ever receive — "two or three years at Tsion's side." Thereafter, he was essentially an autodidact.

And then Tsion was destroyed. The circumstances were complex — academic politics, student radicalism, Tsion's own difficult personality and conservative politics — but the result was clear. In the fall of 1874, students heckled him, pelted him with eggs and cucumbers, and demanded his ouster. The authorities, concerned primarily with restoring order, sacrificed him. He left Russia and never returned.

Pavlov was devastated. His adored mentor had been humiliated. His own plans for an extended apprenticeship as Tsion's assistant evaporated. He boycotted the ceremony at which he and a fellow student were awarded a gold medal for research conducted in Tsion's laboratory. More than forty years later, he still spoke bitterly about the freedom of speech that had been denied him: "To say anything against the general mood was impossible. You were dragged down and all but labeled a spy."

When Tsion's successor, Prince Ivan Tarkhanov, offered Pavlov the position of laboratory assistant — a position he desperately needed — Pavlov indignantly refused. Tarkhanov, Pavlov believed, had "to the detriment of the truth covered up by his authority the blunders of a person of some importance." Truth mattered more than career. Principle mattered more than survival.

He spent the next fifteen years in what his biographer Daniel Todes aptly calls "the wilderness." Rejected twice for professorships in physiology. Laboring in the small, poorly equipped laboratory he administered to make ends meet. Unable even to afford an apartment where he could live with his wife and son. At age forty, diagnosed with "neurasthenia or hysteria," he believed he was dying from a degenerative disease of the nerves. He had alienated himself from the city's leading physiologists. He had no mentor. He was making his own way in scientific isolation.

And yet. Those wilderness years were also the years in which Pavlov constructed the compensations that would enable his later greatness. He developed his surgical technique to an extraordinary level — observers were amazed at "the accuracy of his surgical methods, his speed, the absence of unnecessary motions." He learned to manage a laboratory, to direct the research of others, to build a scientific enterprise. And he married the woman who would become the central regulatory scaffold of his life.


Serafima Vasil'evna Karchevskaia was born in 1855 in the Crimean port city of Kerch, the daughter of a navy doctor. She came to St. Petersburg to study at the Pedagogical Institute, drawn — like Pavlov — by the currents of her time. But where Pavlov had embraced Pisarev, scientism, and atheism, Serafima remained rooted in religious faith. Her populism was "not revolutionary, but evolutionary." Her ideal was Turgenev's Liza or Pushkin's Tat'iana — the Russian woman whose integrity rested upon the strength of her moral compass in harmony with devotion to family.

They met in 1878 or 1879 through mutual friends. Pavlov was attracted quickly, but he was "extremely shy" and "never did this in a direct way." At a dance, he sat on a window sill behind a curtain in deep melancholy while others danced. When a mutual friend sang Gremin's aria from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin — "Onegin, I cannot hide from you / That I love with all my heart Tatiana" — it was at Pavlov's secret request, communicated through an intermediary. He courted from behind a curtain.

During the summer of 1880, when Serafima returned home to the south, Pavlov wooed her through a handwritten journal he titled Trapped: A weekly publication of accidental origin, uncertain orientation, and a future difficult to discern. More comfortable as editor than in personal encounters, he used its pages to present himself as thoughtful, mature, idealistic, ambitious, and — less successfully — playful. The journal included flirtatious personal advertisements ("Lost heart. Finder will receive half. I[van] P[avlov]"), earnest philosophical essays, and increasingly passionate declarations. He described himself as a "samoed" — a person who consumes himself: "One part of him eats, the other is eaten." He confessed that he felt "not fit for life among adults. I am never at peace with this comedy of life, with this superficiality, so distant from true wishes, intentions, feelings, thoughts."

He was intensely, even desperately, attached. A day without a letter from Serafima could produce "curt, fearful, and even insulting" missives. Ten days of silence left him "angry and unpleasant" with "so many hypotheses" about her silence. He confessed to "morbid, spontaneous paroxysms" — the temper storms he could not control. He identified himself with Ivan Karamazov, the Dostoevskian rationalist whose "mind, the mind alone has overthrown everything, reconstructed everything" and who was left "wooden-headed, with a terrible coldness in the heart, with the sensation of a strange emptiness in his being."

And yet he wrote to her with genuine eloquence: "You are restoring my lost youthfulness. Every day, every moment, I see how the thoughts, feelings, sensations of better years come to life, are reborn in my soul. I believe again in the power of thought, in the triumph of truth."

Serafima's friends were skeptical. Dmitrii warned her: "He is used to being spoiled and looked after, and knows nothing about life. You will have to take all practical matters into your own hands — not just arranging for food, clothing, and shelter, but also seeing that he doesn't walk around in galoshes with holes in them, doesn't get his feet soaked, that he has winter gloves, a decent and inexpensive suit, and so forth." Another friend thought them utterly incompatible.

They married in May 1881. The first nine years were a trial by poverty. Pavlov's salary was modest even for those days. Serafima suffered a miscarriage after Pavlov insisted she keep up with his characteristically fast walking — he "paid no attention to the fact that I had to run in order to keep up with his fast pace." When she was pregnant again, he was "gentle and attentive," carrying her up the stairs to their fourth-floor apartment. But their first surviving child, a boy they called Mirchik, died suddenly in infancy — probably from a childhood summer disease. Serafima descended into a terrible depression, unable to eat or sleep, "melting away like a burning wax candle."

Through it all, she organized their life so that Pavlov could devote himself entirely to science. She managed the money — after an early disaster in which Pavlov, given a large sum, lent almost all of it to swindlers and was left with twenty rubles. She bought his clothes. She gave him tram fare each morning, wrapped in a clean napkin along with his lunch. She extracted from him three promises: never to take alcohol in any form, never to play cards, and to receive friends only on Saturdays and attend theater and concerts only on Sundays. He kept these promises for the rest of his life. They were external rules — a personal constitution — that structured the social world into manageable, predictable compartments. He needed rules. She provided them.

The dynamic was the mother-son marriage that Fitzgerald identifies as characteristic of autistic dyadic relationships. Pavlov was utterly dependent on Serafima for the practical management of existence. Simultaneously, he was utterly controlling of her. He opposed her working outside the home. When she was sociable at a party — witty, animated, talkative — he "frowned, said that he was very tired, had a headache, and declared that he was going home at once." He remained in a bad mood for two days afterward. She learned to make a "vow of silence" at social gatherings and concluded, with the wisdom of survival: "This attitude on my part brought extremely good results. Ivan Petrovich was spared sleepless nights and saved from unpleasant and painful thoughts."

Babkin, who knew them both for decades, summarized the arrangement with precision: "Pavlov, being so little aware of everyday problems, in many respects depended on her completely." And: "All those who lived and worked with him, including his wife, had to sacrifice their own interests for his, if they wanted to remain with him, for his own interests were not his personal interests in the strict sense of the word but lay outside him, so to speak."

What lay outside him was science. Truth.


Sometime around 1890, Pavlov's fortunes turned. Through a chain of circumstances involving the politics of Russian medicine, the patronage of a prince of the tsarist family, and the tragic failure of Koch's tuberculin cure, he became director of the Physiology Division of the Imperial Institute of Experimental Medicine. Within a year, he was also professor of physiology at the Military-Medical Academy. At age forty-one, he finally had the resources to construct an environment suited to his cognitive style.

What he built was extraordinary. The laboratory became what Todes has termed a "physiology factory" — a hierarchically organized, rule-governed system in which each person had a defined function and the chief exercised absolute authority. Pavlov hired and fired, assigned research tasks, decided when a task had been satisfactorily completed, and determined whether a coworker would receive his doctorate. Scientific discussion was permitted, but the chief's legendary temper made disagreement "extremely unpleasant." Coworkers came and went; "we, the laboratory," remained.

This was a world in which ambiguity had been eliminated. Roles were explicit. Authority was unambiguous. Social interaction was mediated through the shared framework of experimental procedure. Pavlov could not navigate the subtle, intuitive, reciprocal social world of equals. He could navigate hierarchy. Hierarchy replaced intuitive social cognition with explicit rules. The laboratory was the social environment his cognitive architecture required.

His coworkers became, in his own metaphor, his "borrowed senses." They performed the experiments, collected the data, made the observations. He provided the "directing mind" — the interpretive framework, the theoretical synthesis, the editorial hand that shaped every dissertation into a unified voice. He revised all reports, articles, and dissertations — "sometimes revising all through, most attentively, before publication. He even wrote some of them himself." This expressed the systemizer's need for coherence: the data from dozens of hands had to be integrated into a single, lawful picture of the organism.

His surgical technique grew legendary. He operated quickly, precisely, almost bloodlessly. An observer wrote that he "performed any simple operation so quickly that he was finishing it when the spectator thought that he was just beginning." The experimental animals — dogs fitted with permanent fistulas — recovered and lived for years, generating data in "chronic experiments" that were the methodological foundation of his science.

The research that emerged from this factory in the 1890s earned Pavlov the Nobel Prize in 1904. He and his coworkers analyzed the digestive system as a "chemical factory" — a purposive system producing precisely the type and amount of secretions required to process different foods. The work established Pavlov as one of the world's leading physiologists.

But within this triumph lay the seed of a crisis. The digestive factory kept encountering a ghost in the machine: the psyche. The dogs secreted in response to the expectation of food. They secreted when they heard the footsteps of the attendant bringing their meal. They secreted differently depending on their mood, their personality, their relationship with the experimenter. Appetite — a psychological phenomenon — was "a capricious ghost in the digestive machine." Pavlov, the arch-objectivist, found himself forced to grapple with subjectivity.


"The transition from the usual psychological mode of thinking about the behavior of such an intelligent animal as a dog to a purely objective physiological mode was not an easy matter with Pavlov," Babkin recalled. "He testified several times how painful were his doubts concerning the legitimacy of the purely physiological study and interpretation of animal behavior."

This doubt was Pavlov's constant companion — what he called, in a remarkable confession to his coworkers in 1926, his "Beast of Doubt":

I am unfortunately burdened by nature with two qualities. Perhaps they are objectively good, but one of them is very burdensome for me. On the one hand, I am enthusiastic and surrender myself to my work with great passion; but together with this I am always weighed down by doubts. The smallest obstacle disturbs my balance, and I am tortured until I find an explanation, until new facts bring me again into balance.

This is the voice of obsessive-compulsive personality structure — chronic doubt driving compulsive verification. For Pavlov, the compulsion was experiment. Every doubt required new data; every new data set raised new doubts. The cycle was endless. It was also extraordinarily productive. The Beast of Doubt drove thirty years of conditional reflex research. A single satisfying experimental result could renew his confidence that "we are indeed on the right road." But "the inexorable accretion of complexity and contradictions continually nurtured his Beast of Doubt."

He alternated between exhilaration and depression. He classified himself as a "cycloid" — a term from Kretschmer for individuals who cycle between excitation and depression. "I am an excitable type and, of course, a typical cycloid," he told his coworkers. "I constantly endure periods of strong excitation followed always by a weak, weepy mood, lack of faith in myself, doubts."

His coworkers lived with the consequences. During his depressive phases, the laboratory atmosphere darkened. The chief's temper sharpened. Doubts about the entire research program surfaced in his conversation. Then an encouraging experiment would arrive, and he would be restored — enthusiastic, energetic, full of new hypotheses. The laboratory breathed with his moods. Coworkers learned to read his face in the morning and adjust their behaviour accordingly. Some learned to time their presentations of data to coincide with his better days. The science depended, in ways that were never formally acknowledged, on the emotional cycle of one man.


In 1903, at age fifty-four, Pavlov launched the research program that would transform him from a mere Nobel laureate into an icon of his age. The conditional reflex — his preferred term was uslovnyi refleks, conditional reflex, not "conditioned" — became the methodological key to his grand quest. Drops of saliva became a "window on the psyche."

The experimental setup was deceptively simple. A dog stood on a table in a soundproof chamber. A stimulus — a metronome, a buzzer, a light — was presented. Food followed. After repeated pairings, the stimulus alone elicited salivation. The conditional reflex had been formed. From this basic paradigm, Pavlov and his coworkers elaborated an entire science: excitation and inhibition, irradiation and concentration, induction, differentiation, extinction, disinhibition, experimental neurosis. The terminology multiplied. The data accumulated — tens of thousands of experimental trials by scores of coworkers over three decades.

Consider the fundamental processes. Excitation: the active, engaged, passionate state in which the organism responds vigorously to stimuli. Inhibition: the restraining, disciplining, quieting process that limits and shapes excitation. For Pavlov, this binary mapped directly onto his own experience. The "morbid, spontaneous paroxysms" were excitation without adequate inhibition. The "ferociously precise schedule" was inhibition imposed externally — through routine, through rules, through Serafima's management — to compensate for what his nervous system could not generate internally.

He knew this. He classified himself according to his own typology as an "unrestrained choleric" — a strong type with a relative deficit in inhibition. He speculated that if an overexcitable dog could speak, it "would report that it cannot restrain itself from doing what it should not." He was describing himself.

Consider the experimental neuroses. When dogs faced tasks that overwhelmed their nervous systems — discriminations too fine, delays too long, conflicts between excitation and inhibition too intense — they broke down. Some became wildly excited, thrashing and barking. Others became catatonic, hiding "under the stand until dragged out for experiments." The form of breakdown depended on nervous type. Cholerics broke toward excitation; melancholics broke toward inhibition. Pavlov had discovered, in his laboratory, the physiological basis of what he experienced as his own cycloid pattern: the alternation between periods of intense excitation and "weak, weepy" depression.

Consider the typology itself. By the late 1920s, Pavlov had elaborated a systematic classification of nervous types mapped onto the ancient Hippocratic temperaments. He described them in explicitly anthropomorphic language:

For the melancholic, obviously, every phenomenon of life becomes an inhibitory agent, as he believes in nothing, hopes for nothing, in everything sees and expects only bad, danger. The choleric type is manifestly a militant type, easily and quickly irritated.

He was describing his own depressive episodes. He was describing his own explosive temper. The typology of dogs was, at every point, the typology of Pavlov.

Consider, finally, the deepest structure of the paradigm. Conditioning theory proposes that behaviour is the product of stimulus-response associations reinforced by repetition and governed by deterministic laws of excitation and inhibition. It is a vision in which sluchainosti — the frightening consequences of chance and unpredictability — are replaced by pravil'nost' — the regularity, lawfulness, and correctness that Pavlov sought in every domain of existence. "Only one thing in life is of essential interest for us — our psychical experience." The psyche is terrifying because it is unpredictable. Conditioning theory makes it predictable. The science reduced terror to law.


No image better captures the fusion of Pavlov's mind and his science than the Towers of Silence — the fortress-like laboratory completed at the Institute of Experimental Medicine in 1924. "Thick walls, steel chambers, and special experimental apparatuses were designed to provide total control over the dogs' environment." The experimenter sat in a control room, manipulating stimuli and recording responses without entering the dog's chamber — without being seen, without contaminating the experiment with his presence. The Towers eliminated every extraneous stimulus. Only the relevant stimulus existed. Sluchainosti had been engineered out of existence.

Pavlov would have wanted such an environment for himself. It was the autistic sensory ideal: controllable inputs, predictable responses, minimal social demands. In the Towers, he and Maria Kapitonovna Petrova — his lover of some two decades — worked alone on the second floor. They "ignored all the expensive equipment that permitted experimenters to work from outside the dog's isolated chamber." Instead, they worked directly with the dogs, side by side, in an atmosphere of intense, shared absorption.

Petrova was, by a coworker's account, Pavlov's "best friend and closest coworker." Their relationship was simultaneously scientific and intimate — a compartmentalized parallel attachment coexisting with Pavlov's marriage. When Pavlov underwent surgery for gallstones in 1927, both women were at his hospital bedside: Serafima praying in another room, Petrova standing at the head of the operating table. Petrova recorded that Serafima confided she had learned to endure her husband's outbursts in silence: "I just break into tears and with this the episode ends." Petrova's response — "this was the first time I have heard such a tone in seventeen years; until now he has always restrained himself with me" — exposed the compartmentalized structure. The wife absorbed the explosions. The lover was spared them. Each woman inhabited a different functional niche.

Petrova aborted pregnancies with Pavlov. Her body, like Serafima's life, was subordinated to the scientific mission. Pavlov related to people as part-objects — each serving a function within the monotropic system. Serafima provided domestic scaffolding. Petrova provided scientific collaboration and intimate companionship. Neither was encountered as a whole person with needs and desires independent of his. When everything that matters is located in one domain, people outside that domain become instrumental — means to its maintenance, obstacles to its pursuit, or distractions from its demands.

Coworkers sensed this. They were, as one visitor observed, extensions of the chief — "his alter ego." "The powerful hand of the master" was everywhere, and coworkers "scattered before him" as he moved through the laboratory. Those who could not accept the asymmetry experienced "stormy scenes" and expulsion. Those who remained adapted — learning to read his moods, to time their presentations, to accept that their primary value lay in the data they produced. The laboratory was a social system optimized for Pavlov's cognitive style. It could not have been otherwise and still have produced the science it produced.


Pavlov's daily life was governed by what Todes calls "a ferociously precise schedule, cherishing predictability." He arrived at the laboratory at 9:30 in the morning, left at 6:00 in the evening sharp. Babkin, who worked with him for ten years, "cannot remember that he was ever late in arriving at the laboratory without good reason." The Wednesday conferences that gathered all coworkers for discussion ended "precisely at noon to the sound of discharging cannon at the Petropavlovsk fortress."

This temporal rigidity functioned as a regulatory prosthesis — external temporal structure compensating for internal difficulty with transitions, with the initiation and termination of activities, with the cognitive load of deciding what to do next. Every decision not made conserved cognitive resources for science. The clock told Pavlov what to do without requiring him to decide.

The schedule extended across the year. For a quarter of a century, from 1892 until the Russian Revolution destroyed the pattern in 1917, the Pavlov family spent three months each summer at their dacha in Sillamiagi, on the Estonian coast. Those months were as rigidly structured as the laboratory year, but organized around a different principle. In the laboratory, the principle was cognitive engagement. At the dacha, the principle was physical regulation. Pavlov gardened with an intensity that astonished observers — one contrasted the "low efficiency" of the work with the "remarkable joyfulness and energy of the man doing the work." He played gorodki for hours, exhausting players half his age. At seventy-seven, after three days at eight hours a day, only Pavlov had energy left to propose a fourth day. He swam in cold water. He bicycled. He walked fast.

He read no science. "To maintain mental balance after nine months devoted entirely to research," Todes notes, Pavlov "read no scientific works at the dacha, where he discussed art and read literature and philosophy." Total compartmentalization: nine months of cognitive immersion, three months of physical-aesthetic renewal. The boundary was absolute and ritualized. It mirrored the pattern he observed in his sanguinic dogs, "very lively and active when the setting excites him but then sleeps in the absence of such excitations."

His diet was as regular as his calendar. The family ate the same simple foods his father had served: kasha, shchi, borscht. He was a fussy eater who reacted with visceral disgust to foreign food — in Italy, he complained that "someone had washed their hands in his soup." He drank tea incessantly. The ritual punctuated the day: tea after work, tea after gardening, tea during Wednesday conferences. He played a children's card game called "Fools," for which "especially strict rules were worked out" — the "Fools' Constitution." Even play required explicit governance. He collected Russian realist painting, acquiring a stunning collection that he would gaze at from his divan, his favourite — Viktor Vasnetsov's Three Bogatyrs — at the center. Realism over abstraction: art that represented the world as it actually appeared, not art that required interpretation of ambiguous forms.

These behaviours constituted a distributed regulatory architecture — external structures compensating for what internal inhibition could not provide. They made the world predictable, and predictability was the precondition for functioning.

When the architecture failed, the consequences were immediate. Travel was the paradigmatic failure, destroying every regulatory layer simultaneously — temporal structure, sensory predictability, dietary control, familiar physical routines. On a tour of Switzerland, Italy, and Austria after the 1900 International Congress of Medicine, "nothing pleased Pavlov. He was indifferent to the beauty of Paris, and in the midst of Switzerland's magnificent scenery he stubbornly insisted that Sillomiagy was much more beautiful." In Italy, the food was inedible. Venice was "dirty and smelly." He was "constantly irritable, as he detested the life of a traveler and thought only about returning home as quickly as possible." At the Russian border station, he bowed low to his country and exclaimed: "At last I will be able to have a plate of shti!" The man who needed sameness had been plunged into novelty. He responded as any organism responds when its essential conditions are withdrawn.


The Russian Revolution destroyed Pavlov's world. It was the ultimate sluchainost' — the catastrophic, unpredictable event his entire regulatory architecture was designed to prevent. His social circle was annihilated. One son died on the road to enlist with the Whites; another fled into exile. His laboratory froze. The experimental dogs starved. Police raided the family apartment. The comfortable life the Pavlovs had built was replaced by a grueling struggle for survival.

Pavlov seriously considered emigration. His anguished letters to Soviet authorities expressed desperation, hatred of the regime, desire to leave. But he was in his early seventies. He could not imagine continuing his scientific work abroad. And he was a patriot. He remained.

What followed was an extraordinary fifteen-year negotiation with the Bolshevik state. The state recognized Pavlov's international prestige and appreciated that his research on the material basis of mind supported its ideological commitments. In 1921, Lenin signed a decree promising to provide Pavlov's laboratories with everything he might need. Over the next fifteen years, the state fully redeemed that pledge — and more. Pavlov's scientific enterprise expanded mightily. The Towers of Silence were completed. A grand Physiological Institute was constructed. At Koltushi, outside Leningrad, massive funding transformed a rural dog nursery into a science village — the "Capital of Conditional Reflexes" — an expansive complex with its own utilities, kennels, laboratories, residences, a club, a cafeteria, a swimming pool, and extensive gardens.

Pavlov continued to criticize the regime relentlessly. He protested political arrests, the persecution of religion, the suppression of free speech. He used his influence to save victims from the gulag. He closed his laboratories for Easter and Christmas, defying the atheist state. He actively supported the beleaguered parish church at Koltushi. He refused to subscribe to the state's "voluntary loan" — though he paid the tax for each of his coworkers. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he was simultaneously the Soviet Union's most celebrated scientist and an anti-Communist dissident.

The contradiction was managed through the value hierarchy that had always organized his life. Science was supreme. The state that funded science on an unprecedented scale was, in that crucial respect, to be acknowledged and praised. At the International Physiological Congress in Leningrad in 1935, Pavlov publicly toasted the Soviet leadership as "great experimenters." The toast was notorious among his anti-Communist admirers abroad. But he was acting on the deepest commitments of his life: the leaders of the state had supported science. Science remained the one loyalty that neither revolution, nor exile, nor arrest, nor starvation could displace.

The 1935 Congress was his apotheosis. Some 1,400 delegates from around the world gathered in Leningrad and Moscow. They visited his facilities, marveled at the Towers of Silence and Koltushi, and heard the elderly physiologist open the Congress with an address combining patriotism, scientism, and peace. The Edinburgh biochemist George Barger closed by addressing Pavlov in six languages and declaring him facile princeps physiologorum mundi — the undisputed Prince of World Physiology. Pavlov's face, a witness recorded, "reflected his childlike astonishment" at the linguistic display. "Look, look, yet another language, and another! Amazing — how can a person do that?!"

The ex-seminarian from provincial Riazan. The boy who had been bullied, who had fallen from a fence and nearly died, who had been passed over for professorships, who had spent fifteen years in the wilderness. He was now, at eighty-six, acclaimed by the world's physiologists as their prince — in his own country, before the world.


In his last years, Pavlov applied his scientific framework to himself.

He classified himself as an "unrestrained choleric" within his typology, a "cycloid" cycling between excitation and depression, and a "thinker type" rather than an "artist type" within his two-signal-system classification. "I am absolutely no artist, everything is concentrated in the second signal system." He described the cycloid experience with intimate precision:

When the strong person lacks such a balance, then, engrossed in some task, he draws excessively upon his resources and powers, and finally bursts, becomes extremely exhausted, reaches the point where he is fed up with everything, and there then comes a very long period of restoration.

He was describing his own creative cycle: passionate immersion, exhaustion, collapse into depression, slow recovery, return. The monotropic architecture — total engagement, total depletion, total withdrawal — was the shape of his life.

He even solved, through his framework, the mystery of his own success. How had an unbalanced nervous type become a disciplined, productive scientist? His powerful inborn excitation, he concluded, had been balanced by the inhibition acquired during the grueling wilderness years of the 1880s. Those years of poverty and failure had built the inhibitory capacity that made his career possible. His scientific style — with its interplay of free, even "fantastic" theorizing and "all-sided critical analysis" — was the expression of this acquired balance. He had conditioned himself.

The analysis was ongoing. "I am inclined, constantly observing myself, to compare my internal experiences with the results of our study of conditional reflexes," he told his coworkers. "That which I see in dogs, I immediately transfer to myself, since, you know, the basics are identical." He used the dogs to understand himself, and used himself to understand the dogs. The science was self-analysis rendered objective through animal experimentation. The dogs were externalized self-models. The typology was a map of his own psychological landscape. The laws of excitation and inhibition were the laws of his own nervous system, discovered through the study of canine proxies and then re-imported into self-understanding.


On February 21, 1936, against all persuasion, the eighty-six-year-old Pavlov went to Koltushi. He worked there all day. He returned home for dinner. He was "gay, joked, and laughed, and ate pancakes with enjoyment." At eleven o'clock, he asked to have his bed made ready because he was tired. At midnight, he lay down and never rose again. Pneumonia set in. On the night of February 26, Serafima sat holding his hand. At 2:40 in the morning, she asked him to press her hand. "He pressed it so hard that it hurt, and at 2:52 everything was over."

The monotropic mind, to the very end, could not disengage from its single object. Science was not what Pavlov did. It was what he was. "For Pavlov, it was research, there I exist." When the entire cognitive architecture is organized around a single domain, the domain becomes the self. There is no self outside it, no self that could retire to a garden and let the science continue without him. The garden was never separate from the science. The gardening was science by other means — the cultivation of predictable, lawful growth, the systematic tending of living systems. "I am by nature more of a peasant than a professor!" he had told his coworkers, and he meant it: the man who works the earth and the man who works the experiment are engaged in the same fundamental activity — imposing order on chaos, cultivating regularity, making the unpredictable predictable.


What kind of mind was Ivan Pavlov?

It was a mind that could fully inhabit only one domain at a time, and that found in that domain a depth of engagement, a richness of pattern, and a capacity for systematic ordering that minds distributed across multiple domains can rarely achieve. It was a mind that needed truth with the intensity that other minds need love, approval, or belonging, and was willing to sacrifice relationship, comfort, and safety for truth's sake. It was a mind that could not regulate its own emotional states, and so constructed an elaborate external architecture — schedule, routine, hierarchy, rules, caretaker, laboratory — to do what internal inhibition could not. It was a mind that understood itself through the systematic study of other minds, building a scientific paradigm that was, at its deepest level, autobiography rendered as objective discovery.

The strengths and vulnerabilities were expressions of the same underlying architecture. The monotropic attention that enabled scientific depth also produced practical incompetence. The truth-obsession that made him an incorruptible investigator also made him tactless, rigid, socially alienated. The systemizing drive that produced the conditional reflex paradigm also produced controlling, instrumental relationships and an authoritarian laboratory hierarchy. The emotional intensity that fueled passionate engagement with science also produced the "morbid, spontaneous paroxysms" that made him so difficult to live with.

The contradictions are not anomalies. They are the profile.

Conditioning theory was the particular scientific achievement that emerged from this particular person because conditioning theory — the analysis of behaviour as the product of deterministic laws of excitation and inhibition, discoverable through systematic repetition, organized into typologies, and reducible to the lawful operation of the nervous system — was the externalization of Pavlov's cognitive architecture. It was what a monotropic systemizer with compulsive truth-drive, lifelong emotional dysregulation, and obsessive-compulsive personality structure would inevitably produce when confronted with the mystery of the psyche. It was the systematic reduction of sluchainosti to pravil'nost' — the terrifying, unpredictable chaos of consciousness rendered as manageable, lawful science.

Pavlov conditioned dogs. And in conditioning dogs, he conditioned himself. The life was the experiment. The experiment was the life. He did not merely study conditioning. He lived it. His entire existence was an extended demonstration that a nervous system with powerful excitation and weak inhibition could, through the systematic application of external structure, achieve what it could never achieve through internal regulation alone.

That is what the spectrum meant in Ivan Pavlov — not a collection of deficits, not a checklist of symptoms, but a whole human life organized around a particular cognitive architecture with its own logic, its own necessities, its own costs, and its own extraordinary possibilities. He was, to the end, the boy who fell from the fence and was rescued by the monk's rigid regime — the man who could not govern himself and so built a world that would govern him, and in building that world, transformed our understanding of the mind.
